Gaming INTSUM — 26 April 2026
Date: 2026-04-26 Cadence: Daily Scope: Gaming industry news, 24 hours ending 12:00 UTC 26 Apr 2026
Summary
The biggest story of the day is the ongoing Xbox transformation under new CEO Asha Sharma: Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass both received significant price cuts ($30→$23/mo and $16.49→$14/mo respectively), but new Call of Duty titles will no longer launch on the service — a tacit admission that folding CoD into Game Pass was a revenue mistake. Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed Hexe has lost its second director in two months, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 completed its unprecedented sweep of all five major GOTY awards with the BAFTA win, and Bungie is shifting resources from Destiny 2 toward supporting Marathon post-launch. On the esports front, Epic Games' chaotic mid-tournament reversal of FNCS Major 1 disqualifications has sparked a competitive integrity firestorm.
Findings
Industry Business & Leadership
-
Xbox Game Pass gets major price cuts, drops day-one Call of Duty. Game Pass Ultimate drops from $29.99 to $22.99/mo; PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99/mo. New CoD titles will now arrive on Game Pass roughly one year after launch, with existing CoD games staying in the library. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma acknowledged "Game Pass has become too expensive for players." The move signals Microsoft is walking back the Phil Spencer-era strategy of loading Game Pass with first-party AAA launches. (The Verge, How-To Geek, 21 Apr)
-
Game Pass Starter Edition leak: $9.99/mo, 58 games, Discord Nitro bundle, 10hrs cloud streaming. A datamine confirmed the full lineup for the new budget tier, reportedly launching in May 2026. (WCCFTech, 24 Apr)
-
Assassin's Creed Hexe loses game director Benoit Richer — second leadership exit in two months. Richer departed to co-found an indie studio of industry veterans. Creative director Clint Hocking left in February. The dual departures raise serious questions about the state of Ubisoft's next mainline AC title. (Kotaku, GamesRadar, 25 Apr)
-
Bungie shifts focus from Destiny 2 to Marathon as D2 development slows. Internal reports indicate resources are being reallocated to support Marathon's post-launch content pipeline. Marathon received patch 1.0.5.3 this month with Bubble Shield and melee adjustments. (InfiniteStart, GameRant, April)
-
Microsoft offers voluntary early retirement to ~7% of US workforce (~8,750 employees); Xbox cites cost discipline. This is the first-ever voluntary buyout program for Microsoft's US staff. (RPS, CNN/KTVZ, 25 Apr)
-
Build A Rocket Boy faces legal action over surveillance software on worker devices. The IWGB union is pursuing claims related to monitoring tools installed on employee hardware. (Game Developer, 24 Apr)
Awards & Milestones
-
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 completes unprecedented GOTY sweep — wins all five major awards (TGA, BAFTA, DICE, GDC, Golden Joystick). Only the second game in history to achieve this after Baldur's Gate 3. BAFTA win was the clincher; Expedition 33 shared the spotlight with Dispatch (3 BAFTAs each). The game has also surpassed 8 million sales worldwide on its first anniversary. (Polygon, Eurogamer, TheGamer, 22-26 Apr)
-
Resident Evil Requiem surpasses 7 million copies in under 2 months — fastest-selling game in RE series history. Already a top-5 best-selling RE title in the US after just two months. (GamesRadar, Eurogamer, 24 Apr)
Game Updates & Releases
-
Bloodlines 2 "Loose Cannon" DLC launches April 27. The Chinese Room's first expansion for Bloodlines 2 lets you play as Brujah clan member Benny with proper gun and melee weapon combat — a direct response to criticism that the base game's combat was too limited. (PC Gamer, 26 Apr)
-
ARC Raiders "Riven Tides" update launches April 28 — biggest update yet. Adds a new coastal map (first since Stella Montis), a new large ARC enemy comparable to Queen/Matriarch bosses, and marks the end of Embark's initial four-month 2026 roadmap. (Polygon, ARC Raiders official, 26 Apr)
-
FFXIV patch 7.5 goes live. New main scenario quests, trials, and raids as the path to the Evercold expansion (8.0, Jan 2027) begins to take shape. (Polygon, 26 Apr)

Elite Dangerous delays dungeon-like "Operations" feature to June — third delay. As consolation, Frontier will make the new Lynx Highliner passenger ship (225 capacity) available for in-game credits starting April 28 instead of cash-shop early access. (MassivelyOP, 23 Apr)
-
Slay the Spire 2 patch 0.104.0 (beta): baseline difficulty lowered, Doormaker rework. Mega Crit says Doormaker is "slightly weaker than the other Act 3 bosses" but is adjusting it to be less "abrasive against certain playstyles." The update triggered a second wave of review bombing on Steam, with recent reviews falling to "Mixed." (Kotaku, IGN, 24-25 Apr)

Epic Games reverses FNCS Major 1 disqualifications mid-tournament — competitive integrity chaos. After initially DQing 5 teams for using unapproved third-party apps (and giving warnings to 5 others for the same violation), then disqualifying a 6th team 24 hours before finals, Epic reversed all bans after 3 games had already been played. The community is furious over inconsistent enforcement and mid-tournament rule changes. (HappyGamer, 26 Apr)

Enter the Gungeon creators critique the modern roguelike at 10th anniversary. Dodge Roll's Dave Crooks: "So few people are trying to make something that is truly evocative of this experience of playing Rogue." The devs express concern that the genre is mutating toward popularity-driven design that "obfuscates" its roots. (PC Gamer, Polygon, 26 Apr)
-
Far Cry FX showrunner Noah Hawley doesn't seem to understand how games work, per Kotaku. (Commentary on game-to-screen adaptation disconnect.) (Kotaku, 25 Apr)
-

Analysis
The Xbox transformation is the most consequential industry story this week. The Game Pass price cuts are significant ($7/mo drop on Ultimate), but the real signal is Microsoft removing day-one Call of Duty from the service. This is a direct reversal of the strategy that justified the Activision acquisition, and it acknowledges what internal critics reportedly argued: stuffing CoD into Game Pass undermines the franchise's standalone revenue. The new Starter Edition at $9.99 is clearly aimed at pulling in casual/sub-casual players who balked at the higher tiers. Combined with Sharma's openness to reevaluating exclusivity, this looks like a pivot from "Game Pass as the center of everything" to a more traditional model where Game Pass is one option among several.
AC Hexe's double leadership departure is a red flag for Ubisoft. Losing both a creative director and a game director within two months suggests either internal turmoil or a deliberate creative reset. With Ubisoft already canceling seven projects this year (including Alterra), the publisher appears to be in cost-cutting mode — which makes it harder to attract replacement talent of the same caliber.
Epic's FNCS debacle is a case study in how not to run esports. Inconsistent enforcement, mid-tournament rule reversals, and zero transparency have been recurring problems for Fortnite's competitive scene. The gap between how Riot/Valve handle competitive rulings and how Epic handles them continues to widen.
